Doug Colston
Doug was an amazing man.
He loved God and his family. He was a hard worker and always saw the best in people. He was an amazing husband and best friend. I was so blessed to have met and lived a life with him.
He was a father to 8 amazing children that he loved with all his heart. Seven of them had started their own lives, with one remaining at home. Needless to say, those two had lots of plans…he was set to enjoy the last one.
He was also just beginning his journey as a Popa to two beautiful babies. I don’t have to tell you how excited he was. Those two did not stand a chance or maybe it was him that didn’t. Either way it was bound to have been a hoot.
Doug loved people, he loved to talk (a lot…and about everything and anything) and he never met a stranger.
I believe that this is one of the many reasons as to why he excelled in his career. He loved to cook and he prepared every one of our meals. He was always looking for a new recipe. Some we liked and some, well we just didn’t go there again. He was a sports fanatic. He loved football and baseball. He coached little league for many years. He supported his children 100% in all their activities and with 8 that’s a lot. His latest activity was becoming an Army dad as well as a Baton dad!!! He could twirl a mean baton!!! They were working on the toss and catch…I’m not even kidding…it was quite a sight!! Everything with him became a song and dance. We never knew what to expect from him. His touchdown dance around the room was absolutely priceless! He had the most contagious laugh and the brightest smile that we dearly miss.
Every night we would sit outside and we would talk about our day. It was our favorite time. This was where we discussed the fact that he had stopped by the DMV to become an organ donor.
It was not long after that talk that God would call on him to do exactly that. Doug attended Seminary and knew the Bible from front to back.
John 15:12-13 states: ”This is My commandment, that you love one another as I loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friend.”
I believe this to be true. I watched it happen many times with this man. He was a very giving man. I have a text message from him where he was away on a business trip. He had met a man that had ran across hard times. This man was living in his car. Doug sent me a message and said that he had went and put the man in a motel for a week. He said it wasn’t much, but if anything, for a week this gentleman could rest.
